First visit to the Arboretum

The Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is 300 acres south of the city — easy to underestimate because it's not on a highway billboard. It's worth a half day, not a quick photo stop.

Admission: $7 adults, $3 ages 6–17, free for 5 and under. First Tuesday of each month is free. Hours are typically 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. — check opkansas.org for seasonal evening events.

Start at LongHouse Visitor Center. Floor-to-ceiling windows give you a preview of the grounds. The Community Art Gallery rotates local and regional work — worth five minutes before you head outside.

Don't miss: The Train Garden (a miniature historic Overland Park with model trains), the International Sculpture Garden, and the Erickson Water Garden in summer. The Legacy Garden covers native Kansas plants if you want to understand what's supposed to grow here naturally.

Trails: Nearly six miles total. Main garden paths are paved and stroller-accessible. Natural trails get rugged — fine for hiking, not for flip-flops.

Pair it with: Jinkies Coffee on the way back north, or McLain's Market on Roe if you want something baked. Deanna Rose Farmstead is nearby if you're with kids and have energy left.

Spring and fall are peak season. Summer mornings beat afternoon heat. Winter has the Luminary Walk in December — different experience entirely.
